Delta Lambda Beautillion ClassEach year the Delta Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. sponsors a Beautillion Program to assist in raising funds for deserving male students. A Beautillion is a formal event designed for young men to teach social graces and necessary skills for success in life and to become gentlemen. Each spring Delta Lambda hosts this annual event for high school men from the Baltimore Metropolitan area who plan to attend college the following fall. The ultimate purpose is to create a holistic African American student.

Founded in 2003, the purpose of our mentoring and development group is to educate young men in the 11th and 12th grades by giving them a positive outlook on life through adult male mentoring, lectures, workshops, cultural activities, and practical application. At the culmination of the program, we distribute scholarships to those who have committed themselves to the bi-monthly sessions and have been successful throughout the process.

The Delta Lambda Beautillion Scholars Program provides an opportunity for the chapter to become more involved with young men in the community, to give substantial monies to deserving young men, and to support the international “Go to High School, Go to College” program of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. This program has been developed to provide these individually selected young men with an academic and social support network, encouraging them to become well-rounded in their educational surroundings as well as their communities.

PROGRAM RECOGNITION & ACCOMPLISHMENTS

Having begun in 2003, in April 2014, the Beautillion Scholars Program was honored by the Eastern Region of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity as being a program of “Best Practice in Mentoring African American Males.” As a model program, we have mentored and prepared almost 300 young men to matriculate to the college or university of their choice and have awarded over $376,000 in scholarships and book stipends.

Additionally, in our Beautillion classes we have seen:

  • 100% graduate from High School
  • 680 combined college acceptances
  • 106 graduated with perfect 4.0 GPAs
  • 62 were Valedictorian or Salutatorian of their respective graduating classes
  • 190 were officers in student government organizations
  • 75 were musicians
  • 45% were student-athletes

PROGRAM CRITERIA

To be considered for admittance into the program, candidates must have a minimum 2.5 GPA on a 4.0 scale is required, demonstrated leadership potential (i.e., academic, athletic, religious, etc.) and participation in extra-curricular activities. Beautillion Scholarship Committee members thoroughly interview the young men – reviewing their interest in public service and social and political change.

PROGRAM SCHEDULING

Beaus, as the participants are called, meet on Saturday mornings. This includes a mandatory weekend retreat in January of each year. Beaus have the opportunity to compete for “Beau of the Year” based on their participation in seminars and attendance to cultural activities and events.
