A Go-to-High-School, Go-to-College Initiative

Alpha Phi Alpha established the Go-to-High-School, Go-to-College Initiative in 1922, by then General President and Delta Lambda Chapter charter member S.S. Booker.  The initiative focuses on the importance of completing secondary and collegiate education as a road to personal advancement.  Through the Go-to-High-School, Go-to-College educational initiative, young men receive the information and learn strategies that facilitate success.  Alpha men serve as excellent role models for your sons to emulate.  The Delta Lambda Beautillion Scholars Program is one such effort.

On April 24, 2014 the Beautillion Scholars Program was honored by the Eastern Region of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., as being a program of “Best Practice in Mentoring African American Males.”

WHAT IS THE BEAUTILLION SCHOLARS PROGRAM

Founded in 2003 by the Education Committee of the chapter, the purpose of our mentoring and development group is to educates young men in the 11th and 12th grade by giving them a positive outlook on life through adult male mentoring, lectures, workshops, cultural activities, and practical application as well as creating a holistic African American student.   The program has been developed to provide these individually selected young men with an academic and social support network, encouraging them to become well rounded in their educational surroundings as well as their communities.

As a model program for mentoring African American males, we have mentored and prepared over 300 young men to enter the college or university of their choice and have raised nearly $300,000 in scholarships and book stipends.

 

OUR MISSION

Delta Lambda’s Beautillion Scholars Program mission is to further develop African American young men who have demonstrated capacity to be critical thinkers, globally conscientious, culturally grounded, and purpose driven in their pursuit of a productive life and bring them into a mentoring relationship with the men of Delta Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.  This is accomplished through an 8-month program for approximately 20 – 25 males who are juniors and seniors in the Baltimore metropolitan area public and private high schools.

During the Beautillion experience, the young men who are called “Beaus” are presented with a variety of self-improvement topics designed to facilitate the beaus’ transition from adolescence to adulthood, from high school to college and to help them in raising scholarship money.  Topics such as professional dress and grooming habits, civic engagement and the political process of local governments, understanding emotional health, sexual health, building healthy interpersonal relationships, personal financial management during college and beyond, and post-secondary educational opportunities.  They attend cultural activities, build peer relationships and are exposed to multiple career development activities through career mentors from the Delta Lambda Chapter and partners who share their professional careers.  The Beaus also receive information that builds their knowledge and skills about religion, dating, sexual health, and other topics that will enhance their preparedness for manhood.
