A Night of Thanks and Harmony: Delta Lambda Sponsors Annual Fall Concert in Support of Beautillion Program
The Community Concert Choir of Baltimore filled Berea Temple SDA Church in West Baltimore with over 300 guests for its annual Fall concert, a much-anticipated event that drew in music lovers, community members, and supporters alike. Directed by Brother Dr. Marco Merrick, this year’s concert was another spectacular gathering, sponsored by the Delta Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., as a fundraiser to support the chapter's Beautillion program.
The theme for the evening, "Give Thanks," set a resonant tone throughout the architectural splendor of Berea Temple. The choir’s moving spirituals, anthems, hymns, and gospels created an atmosphere of gratitude and joy, reaching every corner of the grand sanctuary. Renowned soprano Janice Eteme captivated the audience with her powerful voice, leading the congregation in a celebration of spirit and unity. Musical accompaniment from Marcus D. Smith, Kenneth Dean, Bobby Harris, and Nicole Ross enriched the experience, their performances filling the towering ceiling dome with harmony and emotion.
The evening was a showcase of the Delta Lambda Chapter’s commitment to supporting and uplifting the community. Brothers came together across various roles to bring this event to life. Brother Dr. Anton Bizzell served as Event Chair, alongside Brother Henry Kenney III, who led publicity and marketing efforts. Brothers Marco Merrick and Larry Davis handled program and logistics, Brother Billy Wiley managed finance, Brother Ron Wooden led the reception, and Brothers Jovan Hackley and Lewis Williams served as at-large committee members.
Adding to the evening’s significance, Brother Henry Kenney III received the prestigious Seven Jewels Award for his outstanding contributions to the choir and the chapter. His dedication was honored before the full audience, who celebrated his hard work and passion for the mission of Delta Lambda. Another moment of recognition was for Brittany Bright Smiles Howard, choir administrator and a charter member, who was awarded the Josephine M. Robinson Award.
One of the concert's most touching moments was seeing the young men of the Beautillion Scholars program, the very beneficiaries of the evening’s efforts. The support raised during the event will go directly toward empowering these young scholars, preparing them for future success in academics and life.
This annual event remains a testament to the strength of community, the power of music, and the unity of purpose that Delta Lambda fosters. With the music still echoing in our hearts, we are reminded to find joy and encouragement, even through life’s challenges. The message was clear: All is well, and together, we will continue to give thanks.
Delta Lambda visits Battle Grove Elementary
Brothers from the Delta Lambda Chapter visited Battle Grove Elementary School on Feb. 28 to celebrate the conclusion of Black History Month with students in a variety of grade levels. Brothers visited classrooms to read, speak and share with youth in a school with African Americans exceeding 20% of its total enrollment, but which features no male teachers or African American staff members.
The event was coordinated by Bro. Dante Merrell [Nu Mu Lambda, 11'] a life member of the fraternity, non-profit executive, and entrepreneur who counts the school among his clientele for vending machine servicing.
"Since I am the only black male walking into the school, the administration approached me for help. In turn and without a second thought, "Servants of All" I knew and hoped the brothers of Delta Lambda would heed the call," he said.
Battle Grove serves students in grades K-5 from the Dundalk area of Baltimore County. Leaders at the school expressed appreciation for the chapter's engagement during the annual celebration of Black history and achievement.
"Your willingness to give your time and service is greatly appreciated. Your support of Battle Grove Elementary allows us to continue to fulfill our mission to foster the independence, critical thinking, and creativity of a diverse community of learners so they are fully prepared to become confident, responsible leaders who change the world," said Courtney Warlick, Battle Grove Community School Facilitator in a letter of appreciation to the chapter. "Not only does your work support our organization, but it also supports our entire community."
Delta Lambda is an active participant in Alpha Phi Alpha's national 'Go-to-High-School, Go-to-College' educational initiative, which connects brothers to youth in communities surrounding active chapters to provide information, modeling and engagement in educational access.
Beautillion Scholars Program Application
For over 100 years, Alpha Phi Alpha has as one of its tenets, the support of youth through active community service. The Delta Lambda Chapter of Baltimore City accomplishes this by providing individual mentoring and leadership training for participants through programs that emphasize scholarship, manly deeds, and love for all mankind. Our chapter interprets this to mean instilling standards of culture, scholarship, and academic excellence in the lives of Baltimore’s young men. Through programs such as the beautillion, members of this chapter hope to have a positive impact on the lives of youths and to guide them toward more purposeful futures.
